Domaine Colbois Aligote 2022

The village of Chitry le Fort lies just outside the famous wine region of Chablis. Like Chablis, the cool northerly climate and Kimmeridgian soils combine to create one the best expressions of the white grape varieties.

The family history of this super little property goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. Michel worked with his parents until 1970, he then set up on his own with 2 hectares. He and his son Benjamin now work the vines and soils manually so that the roots plunge deeply into the soil and give a true expression of terroir to the wines, an expression of minerality which comes from the Kimmeridgian chalk soils on which the vine are planted (the same soil as Chablis). No chemicals are used in the vineyard and the grapes are hand harvested. The grapes are gently pressed and the wines are aged on their lees. The wines are bottled with little or no filtration. The domaine has received numerous citations in the French and International press.

Aligoté is the second white wine of Burgundy, after Chardonnay, yet it’s hard to find. Some Aligoté is grown in Eastern Europe, but Burgundy is its homeland, even if it is relegated not just to younger-sibling status but to distant-cousin-of-chardonnay. Against all odds, however, some growers have retained their belief in this underdog. Wine makers like Michel Colbois pick by hand and grow their vines with minimal chemical intervention. The Colbois

Aligoté packs a wonderful punch, high acidity, lemony but with finesse and a long finish, great with fish.
