Frank Phelan Saint Estephe 2019

Château Phélan Ségur has Irish origins. Bernard O’Phelan, a young wine merchant from Tipperary, left Ireland at the end of the 18th century to establish himself in Bordeaux. He built a vast estate in Saint-Estèphe, which at the time was known as Château Ségur de Garramey. On Bernard’s death in 1841, the estate passed to his son Frank — and it is in Frank’s honour that the second wine of the Château is named. A fitting tribute to the Irishman who helped build one of Saint-Estèphe’s most celebrated estates.

About This Wine

Frank Phelan is the second wine of Château Phélan Ségur, one of the leading Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel estates in Saint-Estèphe. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, it is a serious, structured Bordeaux with the spice, depth, and tannic backbone that defines the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The 2019 vintage is an excellent year for the Médoc — ripe, balanced, and built to age beautifully over the next decade.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep ruby red with garnet hues.
Nose: Very spicy and typical Saint-Estèphe — nutmeg, clove, and dark berry with a brooding, structured character.
Palate: Medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins and a savoury, complex mid-palate. The fruit is dark and expressive, framed by the firm structure that is the hallmark of the appellation.
Finish: Long and savoury with a firm, persistent close. Give it time to soften — this is a wine that rewards patience.

Food Pairing

A classic Médoc pairing — roast lamb, grilled red meats, or aged hard cheeses. Also excellent with slow-braised beef, venison, or a hearty winter casserole. Decant for at least an hour before serving to allow the wine to open and the tannins to soften.
