Delta Hatters Hill Pinot Noir 2021

Neal Ibbotson was one of the four founders of Delta Estate Wines and is now the single owner. The Delta Wine Company started in 2000 with a single Pinot Noir producing vineyard. Situated to the west of Blenheim, the Delta Farm was first established in 1846 by Constantine Dillon.

The land went through numerous transformations before being purchased in 2000. It had served as a dairy, a sheep farm and because of the splendid elevation of the hills, an airstrip all prior to the creation of Delta’s flagship Pinot Noir vineyard. The shape of the original Delta vineyard is very similar to the symbol for the capital Greek letter 'Delta'; hence the name given to this site on detailed topographic maps of the area.

The name Hatters Hill stems from Tom Hatter, an eccentric and colourful character who lived in rural Marlborough in the early 1900s. Folklore dictates that his time was spent tending to his orchards and walking the hills overlooking the Delta site. It’s been said that we were “mad as hatters” to focus all of our initial efforts on Pinot Noir production in Marlborough in the early 2000’s, and if it weren’t for the quality of the wine, we might have agreed. Hatters Hill Pinot Noir was harvested from the Delta Vineyard, located in Marlborough's Southern Valleys. The vineyard comprises of 27 hectares of Pinot Noir from selected Dijon clones planted in 2002. The vineyard's rich clay soil and elevation combined with Marlborough's warm days and cool nights, make this site ideal for producing top quality Pinot Noir.
