Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30 2020
Vincent Paris is a quiet, gets-on-with-his-work type of individual — but his wines are quickly becoming iconic in the Northern Rhône and around the world. He began making wine in the 1990s, his first two vintages crafted alongside his uncle, the legendary Cornas winemaker Robert Michel. After those two formative years, Vincent struck out on his own, leasing plots on the Cornas slopes and inheriting others from his grandfather. His first solo vintages from 1997 were made in a small garage before he moved to his current facility in 2001.
About This Wine
When Robert Michel retired in 2006, his renowned old-vine vineyards were put up for sale. A fierce bidding war ensued — the valley’s greatest producers all competing for the plots. But Michel passed up a small fortune and agreed a much-discounted price with his nephew Vincent. In a world where banks, insurance companies, and conglomerates are gobbling up vineyards, it is refreshing to see that heritage and tradition still carry real weight for winemaking families. The Granit 30 takes its name from the 30% gradient granite slopes on which the vines grow — steep, demanding terrain that produces wines of exceptional concentration and character.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep, inky ruby with violet hints.
Nose: Juicy blackberry fruit and black cherry with a beautiful mineral, granite-driven character and a hint of peppery spice.
Palate: Polished and peppery with hugely intense dark berry fruit. A restrained style of Cornas — precise and focused rather than overtly powerful — with excellent structure and a long, appetising finish.
Finish: Beautifully long and persistent with lingering dark fruit, minerality, and that signature Cornas pepper.
Food Pairing
That peppery Syrah spice makes this the perfect seasoning for any big red meat dish — roast beef, lamb, or venison. Also exceptional with slow-cooked stews, game, or a rich mushroom-based dish. Decant for at least an hour before serving to allow the wine to fully open.
