Rioja Wines

The Rioja region

is one of the most famous wine regions in Spain, red wines are predominately made from Tempranillo, with a splash of Granacha. The wine region 

with denominación de origen calificada (D.O.Ca., "Qualified Designation of Origin,") the highest category in Spanish wine regulation. Rioja wine is made from grapes grown in the autonomous communities of La Rioja and Navarre, and the Basque province of Álava. Rioja is further subdivided into three zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Oriental and Rioja Alavesa.

Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva refer to the ageing process for Rioja wines, from the traditional terms for youngest to oldest.

In recent times many new red wine styles have been developed and the region added a new class of wine called Joven. These wines can be released with almost no ageing.
