Bodegas Ontañón Rioja Vetiver 2023
Bodegas Ontañón is one of Rioja’s most innovative producers, and the Vetiver white is a perfect example of their ambition. Made from 100% Viura — the indigenous white grape of Rioja, also known as Macabeo elsewhere in Spain — this is one of three white varieties permitted under the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Viura is characterised by its vibrant expression of the clay and limestone-rich soils in which it grows. The wine is aged for nearly six months in oak and a further six months in bottle before release, adding complexity and texture while preserving the grape’s natural freshness.
About This Wine
A vegan-friendly white Rioja made from 100% Viura, oak-aged for depth and complexity. White Rioja is one of Spain’s most underrated wine styles — aromatic, textured, and food-friendly, with a distinctive character that sets it apart from other Spanish whites. This is a wine that rewards curiosity.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Pale gold with warm highlights from the oak ageing.
Nose: Lifted and aromatic — floral notes, tropical fruit, grapefruit, and a hint of toast from the oak.
Palate: Voluptuous and well-balanced with a creamy mouthfeel, white pepper, and a fine line of natural acidity.
Finish: Round and full with a long, satisfying close.
Food Pairing
Excellent with roast chicken, seafood, salmon, pasta, and tapas. The oak-aged richness also makes it a great match for creamy sauces and mild cheeses.
