Maconnais Wines
The Mâconnais wine region is the most southerly of the Burgundy wine regions and is centered around the town of Mâcon, hence the name.
Chardonnay is most planted grape variety, and it thrives in the limestone soil of the area bringing out great flavour and freshness. The region is warmer with less rainfall than other regions in Burgundy. As a result of this grapes grow riper and richer in flavour than Cote d’Or and Chablis which is reflected in their powerful white wines.
Pouilly-Fuisse and St Veran white wines are regarded as the best in the Maconnais wine region. Pouilly Fuisse has recently been granted Premier Cru status for its white wines.
